Neglected Local Visitors: The Urgent Need for Proper Ferry Terminals in Male

Summary
    • Lack of proper ferry terminal in Male impacting locals, especially those seeking medical attention during peak seasons and rough weather.
    • Proposal for two terminals (north and south) to address challenges, including the conversion of former Hulhumale terminal and new facility.
    • Additional services like tuck shops and comfortable waiting areas suggested.
    • Urgent government action needed for significant improvement.
It is unfortunate that the absence of a proper ferry terminal in Male has gone unnoticed by the government and politicians, despite posing significant challenges for locals and negatively impacting the tourism industry and local economy. The lack of a proper ferry terminal makes it difficult for local visitors, including sick individuals and those seeking medical attention, to access the city's hospitals and medical facilities. Moreover, visitors arriving by ferry are forced to harbor near the breakwater without proper facilities and shelter, making it challenging to access the ferry. During peak season and rough weather conditions, passengers are left waiting in the scorching heat or heavy rain, often slipping and falling on the slippery breakwater, posing a risk of accidents and injuries. This situation leaves visitors frustrated.

To address this issue, the government must prioritize the construction of proper ferry terminals in Male. Building two terminals, one on the north Male and one on the south, will help local visitors and tourists access the ferry with ease,. The conversion of the underused former Hulhumale ferry terminal as the north terminal is ideal, and the inner harbor can be reserved for day use ferry mooring. Similarly, a terminal can be constructed on the south Male, and all incoming ferries should be permitted only at these two terminals.

The development of proper ferry terminals will help decongest the harbor area, providing a safe and convenient boarding and offboarding experience for passengers. This will not only reduce the risk of accidents and injuries but also generate business opportunities for local entrepreneurs, enhancing the overall tourism experience in the Maldives. The terminals will also provide shelter and facilities for passengers, making it easier for them to access the ferry, especially for those seeking medical attention.

Furthermore, the introduction of proper taxi queues and luggage management services will improve transportation for visitors and locals, making the overall experience more comfortable and convenient. The development of proper ferry terminals in Male has the potential to be a game-changer for the local economy, enhancing the reputation of the Maldives as a tourist destination and boosting the revenue for local businesses.

In conclusion, the absence of a proper ferry terminal in Male is a pressing issue for local visitors, negatively impacting the tourism industry and local economy. Urgent action is required from the government to address this challenge by constructing proper ferry terminals in Male. This will not only benefit local visitors and tourists but also local businesses, making the overall experience more comfortable and convenient for everyone.

STO's Q4 2023 Financial Report: A Closer Look at Performance

The State Trading Organization plc (STO), a cornerstone of the Maldivian economy, finds itself at a crossroads as its Q4 2023 financials reveal a troubling narrative of underperformance and missed opportunities. While the reported revenue showed an increase to MVR 16,373,104,633, a deeper examination of the figures exposes a concerning trend that demands urgent attention. Financial analysts have been closely scrutinizing STO's performance, and the results have raised serious doubts. Both the Return on Assets (ROA) and Return on Equity (ROE) stagnated at a meager 4.24%, significantly below industry standards for a company of STO's stature. These metrics underscore the organization's struggle to efficiently utilize its assets and equity to generate profits, signaling a need for strategic recalibration. The situation becomes more alarming with the sharp decline in cash flow per share, dropping from MVR 328 in Q3 to a disconcerting MVR 154 in Q4 2023. This plunge in liquidity i...

A Satirical Glimpse into Maldivian Politics

In my role as a cartoonist, I often explore the intersection of art and politics, using satire as a tool to comment on the complexities of Maldivian political life. This month, I've chosen a particularly striking piece as the 'Cartoon of the Month' that vividly captures the turbulent and sometimes chaotic nature of our political arena. This cartoon is not just a simple sketch; it's a nuanced reflection of the fervent debates and the occasionally unruly atmosphere within our legislative processes. The scene is set in a single, powerful frame: one lawmaker is shown in a dominant, almost aggressive stance over another, a stark contrast to the expected decorum of legislative conduct. This striking imagery, accompanied by the puzzled observer from our series being met with the ironic reply of "making laws," sharply critiques the current state of political affairs. Selecting this particular cartoon was a deliberate choice. It aims to provoke introspection about the ...
